Maruti Suzuki Dzire Returns to the Top
After spending much of the past few years behind SUVs in the sales charts, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire made a remarkable comeback to become India’s best-selling car in H1 2026 with 1,26,204 units sold.
The latest-generation Dzire has benefited from its improved design, better fuel efficiency, enhanced safety package and strong demand from both private buyers and fleet operators. Fleet sales reportedly accounted for a significant share of Dzire volumes, further strengthening its lead over the competition.
Tata Punch and Nexon Continue SUV Dominance
Tata Motors maintained its impressive momentum with the Punch finishing second at 1,19,303 units, closely followed by the Nexon at 1,18,166 units.
The Punch continues to attract first-time buyers thanks to its SUV styling, 5-star safety credentials and multiple powertrain choices, including petrol, CNG and EV variants. Meanwhile, the Nexon remains one of India’s most popular compact SUVs with strong demand across petrol, diesel, CNG and electric versions.
Ertiga Remains India’s Favourite MPV
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga secured fourth position with over 1.08 lakh units, once again proving that practicality and affordability continue to drive MPV sales in India.
Its spacious cabin, excellent fuel economy and availability with factory-fitted CNG have made it a preferred choice among large families as well as commercial fleet operators.
WagonR, Swift and Baleno Keep Hatchbacks Relevant
Despite the growing popularity of SUVs, hatchbacks continue to command significant volumes.
The WagonR crossed the one-lakh mark in H1 2026, while the Swift and Baleno remained among India’s top-selling premium hatchbacks. Their reputation for reliability, low maintenance costs and excellent fuel efficiency continues to attract urban buyers.
Fronx Emerges as Maruti’s SUV Star
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx continued its strong run with 95,441 units, becoming one of the fastest-growing crossover SUVs in the market.
Its coupe-inspired styling, turbo-petrol engine option and premium features have helped the Fronx establish itself as one of Maruti’s strongest performers.
Hyundai Creta Continues Mid-Size SUV Leadership
The Hyundai Creta remained India’s highest-selling mid-size SUV with 91,391 units during the first half of the year.
Even with increasing competition from newer rivals, the Creta continues to attract buyers with its premium interiors, multiple engine choices, ADAS features and strong brand value.
Mahindra Scorpio Stays a Crowd Favourite
Closing the Top 10 list is the Mahindra Scorpio, which recorded 89,375 units in H1 2026.
The combined popularity of the Scorpio Classic and Scorpio-N has helped Mahindra maintain strong momentum, particularly in Tier-II and Tier-III markets where rugged SUVs continue to enjoy massive demand.

Outlook for H2 2026
With the festive season approaching and several major launches expected in the second half of the year, competition in India’s passenger vehicle market is likely to intensify further. Maruti Suzuki will aim to defend the Dzire’s leadership, while Tata Motors and Mahindra are expected to strengthen their SUV portfolios. Hyundai, meanwhile, will be banking on the continued popularity of the Creta to maintain its momentum.
If the first six months are any indication, 2026 is shaping up to be another record-breaking year for the Indian automobile industry, driven by sustained consumer demand, expanding SUV adoption and an increasingly diverse range of powertrain options.
