BYD Teases Hybrid Plans for India -Sealion 6 PHEV Could Lead the Charge

China’s EV giant BYD appears ready to expand beyond pure electric vehicles in India, with fresh teasers strongly hinting at the brand’s entry into the plug-in hybrid segment. The most likely candidate to spearhead this move is the upcoming BYD Sealion 6 DM-i, which has already been spotted testing on Indian roads in recent weeks.

The teaser campaign shared by BYD hints at combining “electric and petrol” capabilities, suggesting that the company is preparing to introduce its DM-i plug-in hybrid technology to the Indian market. This marks a major strategic shift for BYD India, which currently sells only battery-electric models such as the Atto 3, Seal, eMAX 7 and Sealion 7.

Sealion 6 PHEV Likely to Be First Hybrid Offering

Industry reports and recent spy shots indicate that the Sealion 6 could become BYD’s first plug-in hybrid vehicle for India. The SUV was previously showcased at Auto Expo and has now been seen testing without camouflage, further fuelling speculation about an imminent launch.

Globally sold as the Seal U DM-i or Song Plus DM-i in some markets, the Sealion 6 combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with BYD’s Blade Battery technology and an electric motor setup. International-spec versions offer an electric-only driving range of up to 80 km, while total claimed range figures exceed 1,000 km on a full tank and charge combined.

The SUV is also expected to bring a premium feature list that could include:

  • 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system
  • Fully digital instrument cluster
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Ventilated seats
  • Level 2 ADAS suite
  • Connected car technology

Why BYD Is Entering the Hybrid Space

India’s charging infrastructure continues to evolve, but range anxiety and long-distance usability remain key concerns for many buyers. Plug-in hybrids offer a middle ground by allowing short-distance electric driving while retaining the convenience of a petrol engine for highway runs.

BYD’s move also comes at a time when multiple automakers are evaluating hybrid and PHEV options for the Indian market. Rivals such as JSW MG Motor and Jetour are reportedly preparing electrified SUVs for launch over the next couple of years.

For BYD, introducing PHEVs could help the company broaden its customer base beyond early EV adopters and premium urban buyers.

Expected Launch Timeline and Pricing

While BYD India has not officially confirmed launch dates, reports suggest the Sealion 6 PHEV could arrive sometime in late 2026 or early 2027. Pricing is expected to position it in the premium SUV segment, likely around the ₹35 lakh to ₹45 lakh bracket depending on the variant and localisation strategy.

If launched, the Sealion 6 would compete with premium midsize SUVs while also creating a relatively niche plug-in hybrid category in India.

Bigger Plans Beyond Sealion 6?

The Sealion 6 may only be the beginning of BYD’s hybrid push in India. Reports suggest the automaker is also evaluating larger and more rugged electrified SUVs, including the Fang Cheng Bao Leopard 8, which recently received a design patent in India.

With hybrids now entering the conversation, BYD seems poised to adopt a broader multi-powertrain strategy for the Indian market — one that could include EVs, plug-in hybrids and potentially more locally adapted products in the future.
