Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has officially unveiled the high-performance YU7 GT electric SUV in China, and it is already making global headlines. The reason? The new SUV has become the fastest production SUV ever around the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany.
The Xiaomi YU7 GT clocked an astonishing lap time of 7 minutes and 34.93 seconds, beating the previous benchmark set by the Audi RS Q8 Performance by 1.76 seconds. The feat places Xiaomi among the elite performance car manufacturers, despite being a relatively new player in the automotive industry.
Nürburgring Record: Xiaomi Enters the Big League
The Nürburgring Nordschleife, often referred to as the “Green Hell”, is considered one of the toughest proving grounds for performance vehicles. Xiaomi’s latest EV SUV was piloted by chief test driver Ren Zhoucan during the record-setting run.
According to Xiaomi, the YU7 GT used an optional Track Package during the attempt, while onboard telemetry showed the SUV touching nearly 299 km/h on the circuit’s long straights.
The achievement is another major milestone for Xiaomi Auto after the success of the SU7 Ultra electric sedan, which also grabbed headlines with record Nürburgring timings earlier.
Xiaomi YU7 GT: Performance Specifications
The YU7 GT is far from being just another electric SUV. Xiaomi has packed the SUV with supercar-level performance figures.
Key Highlights:
- Dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup
- Peak power output: 990 hp
- 101.7 kWh battery pack
- Claimed top speed: 300 km/h
- CLTC-certified driving range: up to 705 km
- 800V fast-charging architecture
The front motor produces around 386 hp, while the rear motor generates approximately 604 hp, combining to deliver brutal acceleration and high-speed capability.
Design and Aerodynamics
Visually, the YU7 GT carries a sporty coupe-SUV stance with aggressive aerodynamic enhancements. Reports suggest that the Nürburgring-spec model featured additional aero tweaks and lightweight modifications as part of the Track Package.
The SUV also appears heavily inspired by European performance crossovers, with sleek LED lighting, muscular wheel arches and a low-slung roofline designed to improve high-speed stability.
Xiaomi’s EV Ambitions Growing Rapidly
Xiaomi entered the EV market only recently, but the company’s pace has surprised the global automotive industry. Its first model, the SU7 sedan, quickly became one of China’s most talked-about electric cars, and now the YU7 GT is helping the brand establish strong performance credentials internationally.
The company has also invested heavily in research and development in Europe, particularly in Germany, to fine-tune vehicle dynamics and track performance.
Could Xiaomi EVs Come to India?
While Xiaomi has not officially announced India launch plans for its EV lineup, the growing popularity of premium electric SUVs in markets like India could make the YU7 GT an interesting future prospect. However, considering its ultra-performance positioning and expected premium pricing, the SUV would likely compete with luxury EVs from brands such as Porsche, Audi and Mercedes-AMG if it ever arrives here.
For now, the YU7 GT remains exclusive to China, but its Nürburgring achievement has already ensured global attention.
